how to design a traffic signal

Flow
of traffic on a highway is normally controlled or regulated at a junction for
effective and smooth movement of traffic. A Traffic signal device is a device used to regulate the flow of
traffic on a highway. It either tells a vehicle to stop or move in order to
permit smooth flow of traffic.
There
are two types of signal devices:
1.  Pre-timed
traffic controller
2.  Traffic
actuated controller
For a
pre-timed traffic controller, timing is pre-calculated or pre-calibrated, and
does not take into account the situation of traffic on the highway.
For a
traffic actuated controller, the traffic or vehicles plying the road activate or
actuate the device by stepping on the sensor.
A traffic signal device could be fully
or partially actuated. It is fully
actuated
when installed at all the legs meeting at the junction. When some
of the legs are left out in the implementation, it is said to be partially actuated. The total length of
time between the different colours of the traffic control device is known as
cycle length, while the different timings between the colours is known as splits. The total number of vehicles at
the beginning of the green coloration is known as vehicular queue length.
Warrants for installation of
traffic signal
1.  Minimum
vehicular volume.
2.  Interruption
of continuous flow.
3.  Minimum
pedestrian volume.
4.  A
situation where you have a school crossing.
5.  Progressive
movement.
6.  Accident
experience.
7.

Systems
consideration.
8.  Combination
of warrants.
