AUTOCAD: DEFINITION, HISTORY,
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF AUTOCAD


AutoCAD
is
a software application developed by Autodesk that enables Computer Aided Design
(CAD) and drafting. It allows the user to create drawings, plans and designs
electronically.
It is also comprehensive
in its ability to create 2D and some 3D drawings. It is also very popular among
CAD users. Abot 70% of CAD users in the world use AutoCAD.

ORIGIN OF AUTOCAD
The company behind
AutoCAD software, Auotdesk was founded in 1982. The same year, the company
developed and launched AutoCad at the COMDEX Trade Show in Las Vegas as the
first CAD program in the world to run on a PC.
From that year 182 till
now, there have been several versions of AutoCAD. Auto desk logo and certain
AutoCAD icons have changed for several versions or releases through these
years. The AutoCAD 2019 release marks the 33rd major release of
AutoCAD for windows.
ADVANTAGES OF AUTOCAD

of accuracy, e.g., dimension, precision.

environment.

to edit.

of repetition and additions.

handling, storage and sorting becomes very easy in soft form as compared to the
conventional printing and filing.

transmission to distant and remote areas is very easy and economical via email
and link sharing.
v Zoom
command facility allows us to see minute details on larger scale view.
v Manual
drafting requires meticulous accuracy in drawing line types, line weights, etc.
AutoCAD ensures conformity to company standards by creating styles that you can
apply consistently.
v Access
to drawing is made easy. With AutoCAD technology, drawings can be saved on a
remote server and accessed from any computer or internet-connected device. It
also saves one from having to carry large quantity of drawings with
himself/herself.
DISADVANTAGES OF AUTOCAD
v Expensive
equipment like computers, plotters, big screen monitors, etc., are required.
v Equipment
are fragile and can be damaged drastically.
v Continuous
updating of equipment is needed.
v Electricity
is mandatory for running the equipment, which is a big issue for third world
countries.
v Data
storage is fragile, high probability of data corruption. Data loss is a big
threat for all soft form data banks.
v Piracy
and hacking threats are always there when you use internet for data transfer or
even storage of data on a computer which is connected to the internet.

computer skills are required. For every new release of the CAD software, the
operator has to update his skills.
